How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

Donna Karan famously created the “Capsule Wardrobe” in the 80's. Her idea was a collection of staple pieces that work together for a myriad ensembles that transcend both time and trend. At Pavilion our brand essence is based on curating elevated everyday essentials, and building a tightly edited collection of pieces that work together to create many effortless, timeless looks. In this week’s Editorial we have selected the core building blocks to the perfect classic closet.

Building a ‘capsule wardrobe’ starts with great foundational pieces. It’s important to maintain a neutral color palette so all layers are compatible in any combination. Tanks and tees in different lengths, shapes and widths to be paired back to your favorite denim. Invest in at least two pairs of trusty denim - a blue wash and a black wash - that you feel good in all day everyday, that are easy silhouettes to style, like a fitted straight leg or skinny. In creating ‘go-to’ dualistic garment choices you’ll be able to quickly put together outfits that you know work for you.

Once you have your thinnest layers set, find your ideal sweater to be layered, worn over the shoulders or as your cozy outerwear. A slightly oversized fit in a soft tone allows for more styling options. For another convertible outerwear option, get yourself a light wash denim shirt to be worn many ways. No wardrobe is complete without a well-constructed blazer and a black silk skirt to dress up any outfit. Add in touches of easy elegance to take you effortlessly from day to night. These pieces will give perennial strength to your collection when layered with other separates.

Accessories always make an outfit. Invest in a reliable clean white sneaker for those dressed down days and a minimal but endlessly flattering sandal to dress things up. Make sure you have a simple black belt and bag go-to shoulder bag to tie it all together. Don’t let jewelry be an afterthought. Mix in straight forward yellow gold jewelry, opt for minimalist charms and chains. Soft shapes like round gold beads and smooth domed rings and hoops are the best way to maintain an everlasting look. Altogether, this collection of separates is reliable for any closet, easily styles with any other pieces, and is a perennial streamlined selection of sartorial excellence.
